Pagliacci, but not the way you remember it
An original, musical community theatre adaptation of Pagliacci, performed at Newcastle's intimate Royal Exchange Salon Theatre.
What is Pagliacci Newcastle?
In 1892 Ruggero Leoncavallo wrote an Opera called Pagliacci [Pah lee ah chee] which means “clowns”. Many people will be familiar with Pagliacci's classic image of the sad Clown singing alone as he puts on his makeup and prepares to go on stage. The story involves a troupe of clowns coming to town , presenting a play in which one clown kills another….. but, because the main actor's wife is having an affair with another actor, The husband plans to actually kill the other actor, ON STAGE!
Our group has delighted audiences by performing versions of this story twice now in Newcastle and we’re planning an even more exciting version of this classic tale for 2027.
The Story
Canio is the owner of a troupe of clowns about to present their comedy. He learns that his wife, Nedda, is having an affair with Silvio who are both actors in the play. In the play, the King [Canio] pretends to kill the Jack of Hearts [Silvio] but now, because he has learned that his wife is having an affair with Silvio, Canio decides to ACTUALLY kill Silvio ONSTAGE!
